Franz and a group of third-class passengers, led by the religiously fervent Iben, seize control of the ship. They believe the boy is a "devil in disguise" and demand he be sacrificed to stop the dying.

A violent brawl breaks out on the rain-slicked deck between the mutineers and those trying to protect the boy. Despite Maura's efforts, Iben throws the boy overboard into the stormy Atlantic.
