DETAILSThe music stopped. The rhythmic shh-shh-shh of the needle hitting the center label was the only thing left. Elias didn't get up to turn it off. In the silence, the "Greatest Orchestras" were still playing in his head, a private performance for a man who had just traveled around the world without leaving his chair.
By the time the needle reached the final track—a thunderous crescendo by the London Symphony—the room was dark. The streetlights outside cast long, amber shadows that looked like the bows of a hundred violins.
