The story follows (Van Damme), an escaped convict who seeks refuge on a remote farm after a daring prison bus breakout. He soon discovers that the farm’s owner, a widow named Clydie Anderson (Rosanna Arquette), and her two children are being terrorized by Franklin Hale (Joss Ackland), a ruthless real estate developer. Hale aims to force the family off their land to make way for suburban sprawl, enlisting a corrupt local sheriff and a sadistic henchman, Mr. Dunston (Ted Levine), to do his dirty work.

Sam’s initial intent to lay low is challenged as he forms a bond with Clydie's children, particularly her son (played by a young Kieran Culkin), who views Sam as a father figure. This emotional connection drives Sam to step out of the shadows, choosing to protect the family from Hale’s goons rather than prioritizing his own freedom.
